For many centuries, people have come to the Cathedral of St Nicholas to find community, comfort, strengthening, encouragement and silence: wedding couples, mourners, the congregation and individuals have filled the church with their presence and prayers.
The Cathedral of St Nicholas also attracts ten thousands of tourists every year who come to discover the spiritual or historical side of the building.
It was the foundation place of the University of Greifswald in 1456 and in 1989, the year of the political change, a place of strength and power.
The Cathedral of St Nicholas is a symbol of Greifswald. Its spire in baroque style has a height of almost 100 metres and serves as a landmark to people coming from afar.
You are invited to discover the cathedral: the building with its 21 chapels, the paintings and epitaphs, the bells which you can hear, the organ, the history starting in the middle ages and the marks that were left by the long years of Swedish reign.
